Why Britain has stagnated and what can we do about it

On Wednesday 5 February, we will be holding a panel debate discussing why Britain has stagnated. Chaired by Vicky Pryce, the expert panel will discuss the issues and how to resolve them.
 
Meet our speakers:

Vicky Pryce is Chief Economic Adviser at the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) and a Visiting Professor at BCU and King’s College, London. She was previously Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting, Director General for Economics at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and Joint Head of the UK Government Economic Service. Before that she was Partner and Chief Economist at KPMG after senior economic positions in banking and the energy sector.

Sam Bowman is head of publishing at Stripe and founding editor of Works in Progress. Sam also sits on the Board of Directors of the Mercatus Center.  He has been director of competition policy at the International Center for Law & Economics, a principal at Fingleton, and executive director of the Adam Smith Institute.

Emily Fry is senior economist at the Resolution Foundation. Emily joined the Resolution Foundation in March 2022. Her research covers productivity, trade, energy and how they intersect with living standards in the UK. Previously she spent several years in finance and academia primarily focused on sustainability and net zero.

James Meadway is an economist and presenter of the Macrodose podcast. He has worked at the Treasury, the Royal Society, and the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and was previously chief economist at the New Economics Foundation and advisor to the Shadow Chancellor. He is currently writing a book on capitalism after growth, due to be published by Allen Lane in 2026.

The event is being at the Royal Air Force Club, 128 Piccadilly, London, W1J 7PJ, The event starts at 5.30pm and will be followed by networking drinks.

Members must pre-register well in advance. They can do so via the SPE office.
