Filippo Gaddo, Managing Director at MAP and SPE member, held a discussion with Vicky Pryce, Chief Economic Adviser and a board member at the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) and author of Women Vs Capitalism.
In the interview, Vicky and Filippo review the landscape of UK and European economies following the recent elections in the UK, France and across Europe for the European Parliament. In the first part of the conversation, Vicky outlines what we should expect from the new Labour government and what are the priorities of Chancellor Reeves. There is a certain degree of optimism in the market about the economic outlook for the UK, in part due to recent positive growth and wage numbers but also due to a perceived macro stability surrounding the incoming administration. Vicky highlights the autumn budget, expected in late September or October, and the pace of cuts from the Bank of England as watch points that could support such positive outlook. The US elections later in the year and the relationship with Europe will also be critical factors. Moving to Europe, Vicky touched upon the uncertainty surrounding the French election outcome and what it would mean for the second largest economy in the EU, but also covered the complex situation in Germany and the relative good performance of Southern European Economies in recent years [boosted in not small part by EU funding and tourism]. Right in the middle of the ‘year of elections’, the conversation between Vicky and Filippo paints a good picture of the status of the European economy and provides some comfort that the next few months, whilst challenging, may also see a return to more stable growth.
