The SBE is delighted to invite you to its Masterclass in career development on the 16th February 2017. The event will take place from 6pm-8pm at the offices of Standard Life Investments. We have three high profile speakers: James Richardson, Bridget Rosewell and Bronwyn Curtis have distinguished careers in government, consulting and financial services:
Dr James Richardson has been Chief Economist at the National Infrastructure Commission since April 2016. The NIC is an independent body, providing expert advice to the Government on pressing infrastructure issues. Prior to this, James was Director, Fiscal and Deputy Chief Economic Adviser at HM Treasury. He was responsible for advising on the fiscal stance, fiscal risks and the fiscal framework. James was Director, Public Spending and Chief Microeconomist at HM Treasury from September 2008 to July 2012. He ran Spending Review 2010 and led on reforms to public service pensions, following Lord Hutton’s independent report.
Bridget Rosewell OBE is one of the UK’s most influential economists, with a track record in advising public and private sector clients on key strategic issues. She is a founder and Senior Adviser of Volterra Partners, a non-executive director of Network Rail and of Ulster Bank. She is a Commissioner for the National Infrastructure Commission She was Chief Economic Adviser to the Greater London Authority from 2002 to 2012, responsible for all transport and economic impact analysis. Her book, ‘Reinventing London’ was published in 2014.
Bronwyn Curtis OBE is an economist whose career spans both the financial markets and the media. Most recently Bronwyn was Head of Global Research at HSBC and is now a non-executive Director of the JP Morgan Asia and Scottish American Investment Trusts, Mercator Media and Australian Business. Previously Bronwyn was at Bloomberg where she was managing editor and responsible for all European broadcasting activities. Other roles include Global Head of Currency and Fixed Income Strategy at Deutsche Bank and Chief Economist at Nomura International. She has also worked as a consultant for the World Bank and UNCTAD on projects in West Africa, Asia and the Caribbean. Bronwyn was Chairman of the Society of Business Economists (2006-2013). She is also a Governor of the London School of Economics, a board member of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a member of the Advisory Board at Imperial College Business School and on The Times Shadow Monetary Policy Committee. She has also been a Board member of the Office of Fair Trading.
They will each speak about their personal journeys as economists: the challenges they faced, issues around diversity and gender and their successes and failures. They will talk about their pivotal career moments and what they did to build their aspirations and goals. There will be opportunities for Q&A so that younger and mid-career economists can take inspiration from the experiences of leaders in the field of economics.
