Chris Giles is Economics Editor at the Financial Times, a position he has held since 2004, having previously served as a leader writer. His reporting beat covers global and UK economic affairs and he writes a UK economics column fortnightly. Before joining the FT as economics editor, he was an economics reporter for the BBC, worked for Ofcom, the telecommunications regulator and started his career with seven years as an economist for the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Chris loves numbers.

Philip McCann is Professor of Urban and Regional Economics at the University of Sheffield and is one of the world’s most highly cited spatial economists and economic geographers. He has won various academic awards for his research in different parts of the world, including most recently the ERSA 2019 European Prize in Regional Science. Philip is currently Co-Director of the ESRC Productivity Insights Network, a researcher with UK in a Changing Europe, and a researcher with the ESRC Rebuilding Macroeconomics Network. He was previously Special Adviser to two EU Commissioners for Regional and Urban Policy and has worked as an advisor to four different directorates of the OECD Paris, the European Investment Bank and government institutions in various countries.
