Populism: Is it the end or the salvation of liberal democracy?

Come listen to Martin Wolf CBE, in conversation with Stephanie Flanders, discussing the causes of the rise of populism and its implications for the future of liberal democracy.

Martin Wolf CBE is chief economics commentator at the Financial Times, London. He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) in 2000 “for services to financial journalism”. He was a member of the UK government’s Independent Commission on Banking between June 2010 and September 2011.

Martin is an honorary fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford University, Corpus Christi College, Oxford University and King’s College, London. He is an honorary professor at the University of Nottingham. In 2014, he was made a University Global Fellow of Columbia University, New York. His most recent book is The Shifts and the Shocks: What we’ve learned - and still have to learn - from the financial crisis (Penguin, 2014 and 2015).

Stephanie Flanders has been Senior Executive Editor for Economics at Bloomberg News and head of Bloomberg Economics since October 2017. She was previously Chief Market Strategist for Europe at J P Morgan Asset Management in London (2013-17) and BBC Economics Editor (2008-13).  She served in the second Clinton Administration as speech writer and senior advisor to US Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers (1997-2001).

Stephanie has also been a reporter at the New York Times, editorial-writer and economics columnist at the FT and an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and London Business School. 

The meeting will be held at Resolution Foundation, 2 Queen Anne’s Gate, London, SW1H 9AA. The event starts with networking drinks from 5.30pm. The presentations will start at 6pm.
