Filippo Gaddo, Managing Director at MAP and SPE member, held a discussion with Marian Tupy, senior fellow at the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity and co-author of Superabundance: The Story of Population Growth, Innovation, and Human Flourishing on an Infinitely Bountiful Planet, around prosperity, abundance and the different ways to measure progress.
In the interview, Marion retells the story of the Simon-Ehrlich wager in the 1980s that then led to the creation of the Simon Abundance Index. Marion also explains what time prices are, how they are calculated and how they can be a better way to measure improvements in the standards of living. In the discussion we are reminded of the ultimate source of prosperity and growth: people and their ideas, and how more people are a good thing and whether we can stop the decline in fertility which could potentially reduce progress improvement. The conversation also touches on AI, technological innovation and the impact it may have on productivity – with Marion and Filippo placing themselves on the more optimistic side of the debate.
