To discuss the UK, Euro area and global outlook, and the risks around that outlook, we have an exceptional line-up of speakers at this year’s SPE Annual Conference, which is being generously sponsored by Bloomberg.

Prof Philip Lane, Governor, Central Bank of Ireland will discuss the prospects for the Euro area economy and ECB monetary policy.

Sir David Ramsden, Deputy Governor for the Markets and Banking, Bank of England will talk about the outlook for the UK economy and monetary policy.

Robert Chote, Chairman, Office for Budget Responsibility will talk on forecasting the public finances: the in-year challenge.

Evan Davis, BBC, will discuss the Brexit debate and the lessons for economics.

Meet our speakers

Stephanie Flanders has been Senior Executive Editor for Economics at Bloomberg News and head of Bloomberg Economics since October 2017. She was previously Chief Market Strategist for Europe at J P Morgan Asset Management in London (2013-17) and BBC Economics Editor (2008-13).  She served in the second Clinton Administration as speech writer and senior advisor to US Treasury Secretary Lawrence H. Summers (1997-2001). She has also been a reporter at the New York Times, editorial-writer and economics columnist at the FT and an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies and London Business School.  In 2016 she was appointed Chair of the Inclusive Growth Commission for the Royal Society of Arts, which delivered its final report in March 2017.

Philip Lane is the 11th Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland, taking office on 26 November 2015. Prior to his appointment, he was on the academic staff at Trinity College Dublin and he remains affiliated with the university as Whately Professor of Political Economy (on leave).  Philip has chaired the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board and was Director of the International Macroeconomics and Finance Programme at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). He has also acted as an academic consultant for the European Central Bank, European Commission, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, OECD, Asian Development Bank and a number of national central banks.

Sir Dave Ramsden joined the Bank to become Deputy Governor for Markets and Banking on 4 September 2017. He is responsible for oversight of Markets and Banking directorates. Dave is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, the Financial Policy Committee and the Prudential Regulation Committee. He is also the Chair of the RTGS/CHAPS Board. Before joining the Bank, Dave was Chief Economic Adviser to the Treasury and Head of the Government Economic Service from 2007 – 2017. Dave was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours 2004 and made a Knight Bachelor in the New Year Honours 2015.

Robert Chote has been Chairman of the Office for Budget Responsibility since October 2010, having been reappointed for a second five-year term in 2015. He also chairs the OECD’s network of parliamentary budget offices and independent fiscal institutions, as well as the external advisory group of the Irish parliamentary budget office. Previously Robert served as Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies from 2002 to 2010, as an advisor to senior management at the International Monetary Fund from 1999 to 2002, as Economics Editor of the Financial Times from 1995 to 1999, and as an economics and business writer on the Independent and Independent on Sunday from 1990 to 1994.

Evan Davis is a presenter of the BBC 2 current affairs programme Newsnight, a role he began in September 2014. From April 2008 up to then, he was a presenter of the Today programme on BBC Radio 4. He is also well known as the presenter of the BBC 2 business reality show Dragons Den and on Radio 4 he hosts a weekly business programme, The Bottom Line. Before joining the BBC in 1993, Evan was an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and at the London Business School.

Rain Newton-Smith is the CBI’s Chief Economist. She leads the team which provides economic analysis and their prestigious surveys. Rain was most recently head of Emerging Markets at Oxford Economics where she managed a large team of economists and was the lead expert on China.

Jari Stehn is a senior economist in the Global Economics Group of Goldman Sachs and was named managing director in 2013. Prior to joining the firm, Jari worked as an economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC.

Tom Orlik is Bloomberg’s Chief Economist, based in Washington DC. Orlik leads a team providing in-depth analysis of global macroeconomic data and policies, and how they will impact financial markets. The focus of his research is on China and the world economy. Previously, Orlik was the chief Asia economist for Bloomberg and China economics correspondent for The Wall Street Journal.

Jamie Murray is Chief European Economist for Bloomberg Economics in London. He has served as an economist at the UK Office for Budget Responsibility, the New Zealand Treasury and HM Treasury. Jamie has appeared in Parliament to give evidence on the fairness of the British government’s forecasts.
